Homemade Tapioca Pearls | Sago | Boba | 타피오카펄 만들기 /  珍珠粉珍珠 from scratch

While I was doing my Milk Tea video, there was an earthquake happened on 22nd of April at 5:11 in the afternoon. The earthquake was a little bit strong. I thought I was just dizzy until I saw our bulbs and my table was slightly moving. It took more or less than 20 seconds.

I never knew that this was literally a scary thing to be afraid of. I’ve experienced an earthquake before but this is the most memorable moment ever that I will never forget.

I hope that it will never happen again :(

Should I say that this is the most memorable food video I’ve ever made. I hope everyone is safe wherever you are and please stay safe.

But as they say, life must go on.

Back to Tapioca Pearls also known as 타피오카펄 만들기, 珍珠粉珍珠 and Boba. Do you know what Boba means in Filipino?

I’ll give you trivia:

Boba means stupid girl/woman and Bobo generally means stupid regardless of your gender, yay! Another trivia: Boba is also a Spanish word which means boob.

Tapioca Pearls is made up from cassava starch of the extracted cassava root. Surprisingly, tapioca is a plant native to South America that’s now cultivated throughout Southeast Asia.

I want to correct the information about Sago and Tapioca Pearls, I thought they are only similar.

We say it Sah-goh in our language Tagalog.

I also tried to make tapioca pearls using Cornstarch instead of Tapioca/Cassava starch, you can use Cornstarch but not chewable to eat. I tried making it because Tapioca or Cassava powder isn’t widely available in the Philippines.

I think I’ve tried thrice making my own pearls, all of it turns out very light even if I am using black food colouring. So, what I did was to add brown sugar into the water then add 2 drops of black food colouring.

The sugar I used was the darkest among the 4 types of sugars available we have here in our country. I really want my Tapioca Pearls to be purely black and it’s a perfect combination of Milk Tea.

The brown sugar will increase the black color of our Tapioca, my black food gel coloring is not that black, it's like a mixed of green and blue something, you can see above the picture that there's touch of green-ish.

I use microwavable or glass bowl which is better to work with tapioca starch since it retains heat a little bit longer.
