This is how to make an inspired Dunkin Donut Choco Munchkins.

Lately, I have been seeing this and I've happened to make this munchkins 1 year ago but it was a bit failure. This was an inspired of Dunkin Donut Choco Munchkin balls which was trending few days ago.

It's already been a decade since the last time I tasted that munchkins and not surprise if the millenials liked it too because it is really good even if you're not a sweet tooth like me.

Someone shared this similar recipe and I forgot who shared this since it's already been a year ago.

Anyway, I am pretty sure it's from Mortar and Pastry which is one of the best Filipino food channel. You may want to check her video tutorial of this. I hope you try it too. Credit to the creator.

Let's compare the original version of Dunkin Donut Chocolate Munchkins to this, they are not actually the same but this recipe is so delicious. It's expected because fastfoods or even the restos we love have secret recipe and who would in their mind share their secret recipe, right?

As far as I know Dunkin Donut Philippines is still selling this with different flavors.

A lot of people I saw online are arguing what really are the ingredients for coating. Some guessed, it has nuts and some said there's no desiccated coconut, so you can play yours and add any nuts to see how it is. Just make sure to make it in powder consistency.

If you know, can you share it with us here? I would be so happy to know.

Despite of that, these munchkins are delicious too and kids will love it too.

Oh! There's one thing I want to you to know, I recommend you to use whipping cream instead of the ordinary milk or evaporated milk. The first one I tried before was a bit different to this. It's tastier and thicker (whipping cream).

Well, if you can't find whipping cream in your area, use nestle cream. I don't know, I tried it too before and it's the closest to heavy/whipping cream.

No oven?

Don't worry girl, it's okay, you can still make your own munchkins by steaming it. I actually want to steam this cake pop but my cake pop molder isn't fit with my steamer so I use an oven.

No cake pop molder too?

Again, it's a no big deal but a little bit messy and gross but let's try our best not to make it gross by using a disposable gloves. To make a cake pop balls, just bake or steam to a pan like you're baking a cake, cool down and mash it.

Yes, you read it right. Mash it then form a ball with your palms, make sure to securely form it into a ball then set aside. You now have an instant cake pop balls. Yey!

Food Coloring reminder:

I just want to share something with why I messed up with my first and failed Donut Munchkins it is because of the super bitter taste.

At first, the outcome is actually looking good and has vividly color orange but, to my surprise, when we tasted my finished product it tasted like bitter gourd. It's BITTER!!!!

I had so much fun coloring my desiccated coconut and never realized that it would ruin my donut hahaha :D That video from last year was already rejected, I was so disappointed which was my fault and learned my lesson the hard way.

So, as you can see it's a little bit pale as compared to other munchkins hahaha.

Ingredients are a bit pricey especially whipping cream. It cost more or less than P200 + (US$ 4) and whipping cream here is not easy to find. It's not readily available at groceries here. The only one I found that's already available in the grocery is Anchor Whipping Cream (250ml) which is expensive and of little amount of cream just for P200 + (US$ 4.00 +) compared to what I used Bunge (1L) which has almost of the same price (see the picture below).

It is supposed to be vivid orange but NOPE! I will never do that again. So, I am reminding you not to put too much Food Coloring if you don't want to experience the same.

By the way, this recipe can make 56 munchkin balls.

Dunkin Donut Choco Munchkins Inspired ingredients:

Cake Pop Ingredients:

DRY
  • 3/4 cup All-Purpose Flour
  • 1/2 cup white granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/2 tsp. baking powder

WET
  • 1 egg (large size)
  • 8 tbsp. heavy or whipping cream
  • 1/4 cup milk (use evap or powdered milk) *Note 1-read below
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil

Chocolate Glaze ingredients:

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 3-4 tbsp. milk (I used evap)

Butternut Toppings ingredients:

  • 2 cups Dessicated coconut (fine)
  • 1/4 cup Powdered sugar
  • 6-7 tbsp. melted butter
  • 2 drops bright orange food coloring *Note 2

How to make Chocolate Doughnuts:

  1. Preheat oven to 375*F
  2. Combine APF, sugar, cocoa powder, and baking soda in a mixing bowl. Set aside. (This is for Dry Ingredients)
  3. In a another bowl, combine and mix the vanilla extract, egg, heavy cream, milk and oil altogether. (This is for wet ingredients)
  4. Add the wet mixture into dry mixture. Mix until combined.
  5. Spoon the batter to cake pop molder. Fill each half-sphere to the top.
  6. Once done and filled, cover and securely close the molder.
  7. Bake or steam for 10-15 minutes (375 *F ) or until its cooked.
  8. After, cool down and set aside.

How to make Chocolate Glaze:

  1. Combine all the ingredients in another bowl. Mix until well combined and thick.

How to make Butternut Topping:

  1. If you have desiccated coconut that’s not fine as mine. Place desiccated coconut to a mincer/grinder or processor to make it fine.
  2. Now, combine fine desiccated coconut, melted butter and powdered sugar then mix well.
  3. Add 1-2 drops of food coloring then mix until orange color comes out.
  4. Let it dry for 10 minutes or so.
  5. Set aside.

*Note 1 - to make milk out of powdered milk, get 1/8 cup of hot water and add 2 tablespoons of milk powder and stir well. Set aside and cool down. I usually do this when the recipe has milk in the ingredients and I don't have milk but milk powder.

*Note 2 - If you don't have orange food coloring but you have red food coloring, it's fine since the butter is already yellow in color. When you mix yellow and red, it will turn out as orange.  Now, if you have both yellow and red food coloring then it's good, just get 1 drop each of the food coloring and put it directly into the butternut coating. By the way, I used food gel coloring not the liquid type. In case, you have liquid food coloring, it's okay so just use that instead. Lastly, use a plastic stick or skewer to avoid over spill. It happens when you use liquid food coloring.
