How to make Kwek Kwek coating

I’m really craving for this ever since I was in college with my friends and classmates, we used to eat Kwek kwek in one of our trusted Manong (Vendor) before. So this is my 4th attempt to make it. Honestly, this really took my time to make but because this is my favorite I don’t care as long as I can eat one, I’m satisfied.

The Kwek Kwek is one of the favorite street foods in the Philippines and must try for the first-timer.

Kwek Kwek is made up of hard boiled quail eggs, coated with attractive color orange that filipinos love and cooked it in a deep fried boiling cooking oil. This is also one of the most popular street foods in the Philippines.

If you happen to be in the busiest road in Philippines you will see a lot of these everywhere and if you are also a tourist from outside the Philippines. You must try this and don’t skip it.

Honestly, in the eyes of the foreigner it is kind of weird but it is actually not. This is actually very delicious.

This is not different in the usual hard-boiled egg we eat. The only difference is the coated orange in the quail egg and cook in deep fry pan/pot.

This is hard-boiled eggs.

The ingredients of coated egg is just as easy to find, you can easily find them in all market except the quail egg.

I heard from a foreigner that quail eggs are hard to find or expensive, I think that quail eggs are already available in can. So, that one can be used. You can also use the regular egg if you don’t have a quail egg in the country where you stay.

Don’t worry because the taste of regular hard boiled egg and quail egg are the same. These are the ingredients for coating:

Ingredients: (Updated post)

Batter:

  • hard boiled quail egg
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 3/4 cup All-Purpose Flour
  • Orange Food Coloring (in this video, I used 2 food coloring Red and Yellow then combine these two to get the orange color)
  • 1 pack Maggi Magic Sarap

  • Oil (for deep frying)
  • 1/4 cup All Purpose Flour (for coating the hard boiled quail eggs)

Food Color:
Whatever food color you have either it is liquid or powder, it’s okay to use either one of them as long as the color is orange or yellow.

What to do with your quail eggs:

Quail eggs / regular egg - boil them in 10-15 minutes and after that, place it in cold water or with ice cubes then leave them for a second then peel, wash in water, drain and set aside.

Here is how to make a orange/yellow coating/batter:

  1. Combine flour, water, food coloring, salt and ground pepper. Mix all of them except the baking powder. The baking powder will be used later for first layer to coat before frying it with orange coat.
  2. Make sure to mix them well, mix well until flour is dissolved and it should be thick.
  3. If your mixture is not yet thick just add flour until you get the thick consistency.
  4. Leave it for 15 minutes.
  5. While waiting for 15 minutes, prepare your pot/pan to a medium heat and pour cooking oil on it
  6. Make sure that cooking oil is hot enough to deep fry your quail eggs.
  7. After minutes of waiting, you can now dip hard boiled eggs to baking powder one by one and then dip to your mixture(batter).
  8. Use a spoon to form a round shape for your hard boiled quail eggs then deep fry one at a time in a low-medium heat until they are cooked.
  9. Serve it with your favorite sour sauce.

Goodluck and I hope you try this mouth watering snack food.Tags - snack food,
